Rabbi Russel Stone has been the chief Rabbi of B'nai Ben-Zion synagogue for almost twenty years. Lack of funds and dwindling congregation numbers have tested his faith somewhat, and he has become increasingly bitter with the passage of time. Despite all this, he is extremely protective of his people and feels it his duty to help and defend them.
Cantor Josh Kaplan is a newcomer to B'nai Ben-Zion synagogue. Despite being very naive and over-eager, he continues to remain on staff mainly because he is one of the few that can stand being around Rabbi Stone. He idolizes the Rabbi, almost to the point of hero-worship. Why he does so, nobody can say. He spends every Shabbos singing the Hebrew prayers to an empty congregation, but doesn't seem to mind.
Rajshree Lauder works at a fashion company in the garment center of New York. At least, she did until the recent murder of her husband and business partner, Jack. Fiercely defensive and opinionated, she deeply resents Rabbi Stone's intrusion into her life but accepts the Rabbi's offer to help. Despite not being Jewish, she is holding a shivah service out of respect for her husband's religion.
Rabbi Amos Zelig moved to New York in 1963 with his wife Carol and his dog Dodger. Since then, he has been one of the most prolific Rabbis in the city. His wife and dog are gone now, but Beth Tikvah remains one of the strongest centers of the jewish community. On the surface, he gives every impression of being a respectable Rabbi. Is he the real deal? Or is it just a front for more... sinister activities?
Joe DeMarco seems to move in the shadows. His name appears every where you look, but little is known about him. Could he be the key in solving the mystery?
Detective Sam Durkin works for the NYPD's midtown south precinct. He has been assigned to solve the murder of Jack Lauder, and is convinced that Rabbi Stone is the culprit.
