After watching her mother wither and die, Lauren Blackwell has no desire to follow the same path.  With nothing to lose, she accepts her newfound duty as a medium with extreme zeal.  In her free time, she drinks gallons of coffee and smokes dozens of cigarettes.  She is antagonistic and blunt when talking to people, and tends to leap recklessly into dangerous situations.  While blatantly bitter about her situation, she knows she's good at what she does.
Joey Mallone has been haunting the Blackwell family for generations. Nobody knows why, least of all Joey. He is strangely tight-lipped about his past, usually deflecting inquiries with either a glib remark or wrathful verbal abuse. Whatever caused him to be in this situation, he is not happy about it. Regardless, he makes the best of it and does what has to be done. For better or worse.
Known as "C", this charming, wise-cracking piano player has been playing at Johnny Ivory's for years.  Known for being friendly and making the customers comfortable, he's a favorite at nightclubs all over the city.  Is this happy-go-lucky attitude for real?  Or is he hidng a darker secret?
Music manager, agent, and promoter, Dwayne has been in the biz long enough to know what's what.  You'll always find him at his office, burning the midnight oil, dealing with constant paperwork or comforting his clients' egos.
Joseph Mitchell is a journalist for The New Yorker magazine. For nearly 30 years, he has carved a name for himself with his carefully written character-portraits of New York's various eccentrics and bohemians.  While you could always count on him to write two or three pieces a week, something has changed.  His typewriter has been curiously silent for five years.  Is this an ordinary case of writer's block?  Or something else?
Harriet Sherman is a miserly, crotchety old woman living downtown.  If she has any information for Lauren, it won't be easy for her to get it.
Unknown.  Nobody can determine who this jazz-playing spirit is.  He doesn't speak.  He only plays.  Forever.
Unknown.  This lost spirit has been haunting a midtown construction site for months, confused and muttering to herself.  Can Lauren and Joey discover what she is doing and, more importantly, get her to leave?
